In the summer of 2017, Chih-En Liu from the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (DASLP), Asia University, joined the Oversea Professional Social Service (OProSS) program to provide educational services in Lesotho and Swaziland in South Africa.

Eleven students from Asia University joined OProSS with expenditure fully covered by the University. All participants were requested to design at least one mini course relative to their academic major for children at the Amitofo Care Center (ACC). For Liu, she decided to provide an anatomy course and screening test demonstrations in audiology and speech-language pathology.

During the Share-and-Reflect Meeting with the DASLP students and faculty, Liu shared that she has always dreamed to join the voluntary service in Africa some day after growing up. “I didn’t expect that I’d come across with this opportunity, and I am really happy because my dream has come true so soon.”

Liu also mentioned that despite children at ACC are all orphans and have gone through hardship due to their family background, they retain a pure soul and apply the concept of sharing. I am impressed and am deeply touched,” Liu reflected.

As a final comment, Liu sincerely encouraged freshmen to join the 2018 OProSS program. “It’s more than the culture and natural scenery you get to experience,” Liu said. “It’s also about having the opportunity to look into the local people’s outlook on life.”
